Ipecac

Ipecac is an emetic agent derived from the roots and rhizomes of the plant *Carapichea ipecacuanha* (formerly *Cephaelis ipecacuanha*), containing active alkaloids such as emetine and cephaeline. It was historically used to induce vomiting in cases of poisoning by irritating the gastric mucosa and stimulating the medullary chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain. Ipecac was also used as an expectorant at lower doses. Its use has been largely discontinued due to safety concerns and lack of efficacy compared to alternatives like activated charcoal. The drug is inherently toxic in large or repeated doses, with risks including cardiotoxicity and aspiration pneumonia[1][3][5][6][8].
