Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ipecacuanha extract is a botanical extract obtained from the dried roots and rhizomes of *Carapichea ipecacuanha* (also known as *Cephaelis ipecacuanha*). The extract contains bioactive alkaloids, most notably emetine and cephaeline, which exert therapeutic effects. It is primarily utilized as an emetic to induce vomiting in the emergency management of certain types of poisoning, functioning via local irritation of the gastric mucosa and central stimulation of the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the medulla. Additionally, it is used in sub-emetic doses as an expectorant in cough preparations to facilitate the clearance of bronchial secretions. Inga Pharmaceuticals serves as a bulk manufacturer and supplier of this pharmaceutical-grade extract.
