IPL344 is a novel biologically active peptide developed for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It works by directly activating the Akt signaling pathway within cells, bypassing damaged cell membrane receptors that are often impaired in ALS. The Akt pathway plays a critical role in cell survival, inhibiting apoptosis and inflammation, and its activity is down-regulated in ALS patients. By reactivating this pathway, IPL344 aims to address key ALS pathologies such as apoptosis, cellular stress, protein misfolding, glucose metabolism dysfunction, and inflammation. Preclinical studies have shown improved neuromuscular function and extended survival in animal models. Clinical trials have demonstrated that IPL344 slows disease progression (as measured by ALSFRS-R), reduces neurofilament light chain levels (a marker of neuronal injury), increases body weight compared to controls, and is well-tolerated with no major safety concerns. The drug is administered as a daily intravenous bolus injection at home[1][2][5][6][7][8].
