Overview

Ipragliflozin is a small molecule, orally active sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and, in some regions, type 1 diabetes mellitus. By selectively inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal tubule of the kidney, it reduces glucose reabsorption and promotes urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Ipragliflozin was jointly developed by Astellas Pharma and Kotobuki Pharmaceutical and first approved in Japan in January 2014 under the brand name Suglat. It has also been approved for use in Russia. The drug is typically administered as a tablet once daily[3][8][9].
