Overview

Ipratropium bromide is a quaternary ammonium anticholinergic bronchodilator used primarily for the maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, as well as for asthma symptom control. It acts as a nonselective muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, blocking cholinergic influences on bronchial smooth muscle to induce bronchodilation and reduce mucus secretion. Due to its quaternary amine structure, it does not cross the blood–brain barrier, minimizing central side effects. It is administered mainly by inhalation for local effect in the lungs[1][2][3][7][10].
