Overview

Ipratropium bromide + oxtriphylline is a combination drug used primarily for the management of obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Ipratropium bromide is an inhaled anticholinergic bronchodilator that works by antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the airways, leading to bronchodilation and reduced bronchial secretions. Oxtriphylline is a methylxanthine derivative related to theophylline; it acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, increasing intracellular cyclic AMP levels and resulting in smooth muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. The combination leverages two distinct mechanisms—anticholinergic blockade (ipratropium) and phosphodiesterase inhibition (oxtriphylline)—to provide additive or synergistic bronchodilatory effects. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can improve lung function without significantly increasing side effects compared to monotherapy, making it useful for patients who do not respond adequately to single-agent therapy or who cannot tolerate beta-agonists[1][2][3].
