iPS-derived corneal cell therapy is a regenerative medicine product consisting of a sheet of corneal epithelial cells derived from allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Developed by Osaka University in collaboration with Sumitomo Pharma, the therapy is designed to treat corneal epithelial stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition where the loss of limbal stem cells leads to corneal opacity, edema, and vision loss. The treatment involves the surgical transplantation of a lab-grown cell sheet onto the patient's ocular surface to restore a functional corneal epithelium. This approach aims to provide a stable and transparent corneal surface without the need for autologous tissue or long-term immunosuppression typically required for allogeneic tissue transplants.
