Overview

This intervention is a multi-component therapeutic bundle developed by the Washington University School of Medicine to improve birth outcomes in malnourished pregnant women. It combines nutritional support in the form of ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF) with a comprehensive anti-infective regimen. The anti-infective component includes monthly intermittent preventive treatment for malaria (IPTp) using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, scheduled doses of the antibiotic azithromycin to target reproductive tract infections and inflammation, the anthelmintic albendazole for intestinal parasites, and screening-based treatment for bacterial vaginosis using metronidazole. The strategy aims to mitigate the synergistic negative effects of undernutrition and chronic infection/inflammation on maternal health and fetal development.
