IPX054

IPX054 is an investigational extended-release oral formulation of carbidopa and levodopa developed by Impax Laboratories for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It was designed to improve the pharmacokinetic profile of levodopa by providing more consistent plasma concentrations, thereby reducing the 'wearing-off' effect and motor fluctuations (dyskinesia) associated with standard immediate-release carbidopa-levodopa therapy. Carbidopa serves as a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor to prevent the breakdown of levodopa before it crosses the blood-brain barrier, where levodopa is converted into dopamine to replenish depleted levels in the striatum. IPX054 was evaluated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials to compare its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics against immediate-release and controlled-release formulations.
