Overview

IQP-0528 is a small molecule antiretroviral drug under investigation primarily as a topical microbicide for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It is a pyrimidinedione derivative that acts as a highly potent non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), showing nanomolar activity against both HIV-1 and HIV-2, including wild-type and drug-resistant strains[2][4][6]. In addition to inhibiting reverse transcriptase, IQP-0528 also blocks HIV entry through an additional mechanism believed to target a conformational epitope formed prior to viral envelope fusion with the host cell membrane[2][5][8]. The compound has demonstrated minimal toxicity in vitro and ex vivo, good chemical stability, and broad-spectrum antiviral activity. It has been formulated into vaginal gels for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and evaluated in clinical trials for local safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy as an HIV microbicide[6][7].
