Overview

iQure Pharma is developing a therapeutic program targeting the Excitatory Amino Acid Transporter 2 (EAAT2), also known as SLC1A2, for the treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). EAAT2 is the primary glutamate transporter in the central nervous system, responsible for clearing excess glutamate from the synaptic cleft to prevent neurotoxicity. In ALS, reduced EAAT2 expression or function leads to glutamate excitotoxicity, which contributes to the degeneration of motor neurons. This program aims to modulate or increase EAAT2 activity to restore glutamate homeostasis and provide neuroprotection. While iQure's lead compound iQ-007 also targets EAAT2 for multiple indications including ALS, this specific program is listed as an undisclosed asset in the company's pipeline dedicated to ALS.
