Overview

IR-2022-002 is a functional ingredient developed by Dong-A Pharmaceutical for the mitigation of hangover symptoms. It is a fermented extract derived from rice germ and soybeans, categorized as a health functional food ingredient in South Korea. The substance functions by enhancing the metabolic breakdown of alcohol and its toxic metabolite, acetaldehyde, through the stimulation of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymes. By accelerating these enzymatic pathways, IR-2022-002 facilitates the rapid clearance of ethanol and acetaldehyde from the bloodstream, thereby reducing common hangover symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue. The ingredient received individual recognition from the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in late 2023 and is utilized as a key active component in Dong-A's Morning Care product line.
