Overview

IR501 is a therapeutic vaccine developed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It consists of a combination of three peptides (Vbeta3, Vbeta14, and Vbeta17) derived from T cell receptors (TCRs), formulated in incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA). The mechanism of action is based on targeting autoreactive T cells implicated in the inflammation and joint destruction characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis. By presenting these specific TCR peptides as antigens, IR501 aims to induce immune tolerance or modulate the immune response against pathogenic T cells. Clinical trials have shown that IR501 is safe and well tolerated; it demonstrated statistically significant improvement in disease activity at certain dosages compared to placebo according to American College of Rheumatology criteria. The drug has reached phase 3 clinical development[1][2][3][4][5].
