IR780 + PLGA + MnO2 is a multifunctional core-shell nanoparticle designed for enhanced sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The platform consists of a PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)) core encapsulating the sonosensitizer IR780, which is then coated with a manganese dioxide (MnO2) shell. The MnO2 shell serves as a pH-responsive and hydrogen peroxide-triggered component that decomposes in the tumor microenvironment to release oxygen, thereby alleviating tumor hypoxia and enhancing the efficacy of SDT. This decomposition also releases Mn2+ ions, which act as a T1-weighted MRI contrast agent for tumor imaging. Upon ultrasound excitation, the released IR780 generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) to induce tumor cell death. This nanoplatform is primarily investigated in preclinical research for the treatment of breast cancer.
