IR800 pHLIP is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging conjugate designed for preclinical oncology research. It consists of the pH Low Insertion Peptide (pHLIP) covalently linked to the fluorophore IRDye 800CW. The pHLIP component is a water-soluble peptide that undergoes a conformational change in acidic environments (pH < 7.0), such as those found in the tumor microenvironment, leading to its insertion into the cell membrane. This mechanism allows for the targeted delivery and accumulation of the IR800 dye at tumor sites, enabling high-contrast imaging of tumor acidity, necrosis, and hypoxia. It is primarily used in mouse models of various cancers, including glioblastoma and ovarian adenocarcinoma, to map metabolic changes and tumor margins. It is currently a research-use-only compound and is not approved for therapeutic use in humans.
