Overview
Irinotecan liposome II is a liposomal formulation of irinotecan, a topoisomerase I inhibitor. The liposomal encapsulation is designed to improve the pharmacokinetic profile of irinotecan, leading to prolonged circulation in the bloodstream and enhanced accumulation within tumor tissues through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. This formulation allows for sustained release of the active metabolite, SN-38, which ultimately increases antitumor activity and may reduce systemic toxicity compared to non-liposomal irinotecan. It is used in the treatment of various cancers, particularly pancreatic and gastric cancers.
