Overview
Irinotecan-loaded Embozene TANDEM Microspheres is an investigational drug-device combination product developed by Boston Scientific for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer, specifically colorectal liver metastases. The product consists of the chemotherapy agent irinotecan, a topoisomerase I inhibitor, loaded into second-generation, precisely calibrated 40 μm Embozene TANDEM drug-eluting microspheres. Administered via transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), the microspheres are designed to penetrate deep into the tumor vasculature, where they provide sustained local release of the chemotherapy payload while simultaneously blocking the blood supply to the tumor (ischemia). This localized delivery approach aims to maximize the concentration of the active drug within the tumor while reducing systemic exposure and associated side effects.
