Overview

Irochel is a polyherbal Unani formulation developed by Hamdard University for the management of transfusion-induced iron overload in patients with thalassemia. It is composed of hydroethanolic extracts from six medicinal herbs and is formulated as a 500 mg oral tablet. The drug acts as an iron chelator, facilitating the removal of excess iron accumulated due to frequent blood transfusions. In clinical trials, it has been evaluated against deferoxamine (DFO) in pediatric and adolescent populations, demonstrating potential efficacy in reducing serum ferritin levels while offering a more convenient oral administration route compared to the parenteral infusion required for DFO.
