Overview

Irolumab is a monoclonal antibody identified as a PCSK9 inhibitor. It is currently being investigated in a clinical trial for its effect on serum lipids and cardiovascular events in patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) before and after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). As a PCSK9 monoclonal antibody, its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin type 9 protein, which typically degrades LDL receptors. By blocking PCSK9, irolumab is expected to increase the number of LDL receptors on liver cells, thereby enhancing the clearance of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from the bloodstream.
