Iron

Iron is an essential mineral and a small molecule drug used primarily to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia. It is available in several salt forms including ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate. Iron works by replenishing body stores of the mineral necessary for hemoglobin production in red blood cells and myoglobin in muscle cells. These proteins are critical for oxygen transport and storage within the body. Iron supplementation is indicated when dietary intake is insufficient or when increased requirements (such as pregnancy) or losses (such as bleeding) occur. Overdose can be fatal—especially in children—and may cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and systemic toxicity[1][4][5][8].
