Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Maltofer Fol is an oral antianemic combination therapy developed by CSL Vifor. It is formulated as a chewable tablet containing 100 mg of elemental iron in the form of iron(III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC) and 0.35 mg (350 micrograms) of folic acid. The IPC component provides a stable, non-ionic form of iron that is actively absorbed in the intestine via physiological pathways, which helps minimize the gastrointestinal side effects often associated with traditional ferrous salts. The iron component is utilized for hemoglobin synthesis and the replenishment of iron stores, while the folic acid component supports nucleic acid synthesis and helps prevent megaloblastic anemia and neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Maltofer Fol is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.
