This is a combination therapy consisting of iron (typically administered as intravenous iron formulations such as iron dextran, ferric gluconate, or ferumoxytol) and erythropoietin (a recombinant human erythropoiesis-stimulating agent). The combination is used primarily to treat anemia, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease or those undergoing chemotherapy. Erythropoietin stimulates the production of red blood cells by promoting the differentiation and proliferation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. Iron supplementation ensures adequate availability of iron for hemoglobin synthesis during increased red cell production induced by erythropoietin. Clinical studies have shown that combining intravenous iron with erythropoietin improves hematologic response compared to either agent alone, particularly in cases where oral iron is insufficient or malabsorbed[3][6]. This approach helps overcome functional or absolute iron deficiency that can limit the effectiveness of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents.
