Overview

Bolgre is an oral iron supplement developed by JW Pharmaceutical for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, particularly in pregnant women. The active ingredient is iron acetyl-transferrin, which is a modified form of the iron-binding protein transferrin. Unlike conventional oral iron salts that are absorbed via passive diffusion or the divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) pathway, iron acetyl-transferrin is designed to utilize the body's natural transferrin receptor-mediated endocytosis system. This targeted delivery mechanism is intended to enhance iron absorption and bioavailability while minimizing the gastrointestinal irritation often associated with traditional iron supplements. The drug has been evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials in South Korea, comparing its performance to intravenous iron sucrose (Venoferrum).
