Overview

Iron amino acid chelate is a specialized oral iron formulation where elemental iron is chemically bound to amino acids. This chelation process is designed to enhance bioavailability and reduce common gastrointestinal side effects associated with traditional iron salts like ferrous sulfate, such as constipation and nausea. In a clinical study conducted by Assiut University (NCT02858505), this formulation was evaluated for the prevention of iron deficiency anemia in women with twin gestations. The trial compared daily doses of 27 mg and 54 mg of elemental iron, finding both effective in maintaining hematological parameters, though the higher dose was linked to increased side effects. The chelated structure protects the iron from dietary inhibitors and reduces the formation of free radicals in the gut, leading to improved patient compliance and efficacy.
