Iron dextrin is a colloidal complex of ferric hydroxide and dextrin, a carbohydrate produced by the hydrolysis of starch. It serves as a parenteral iron supplement, primarily utilized in veterinary medicine for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia, particularly in neonatal piglets. In the field of biomedical research, iron dextrin is frequently employed as an agent to induce experimental iron overload in animal models. This allows for the study of iron-related pathologies, such as iron-overload-associated knee osteoarthritis and hepatic siderosis, as mentioned in recent literature regarding the protective effects of compounds like Biochanin A. Following administration, the complex is sequestered by the reticuloendothelial system, where the iron is gradually released and subsequently bound to transferrin for transport to erythroid precursors or stored within ferritin and hemosiderin.
