Overview

Iron protein acetyl aspartate (also known as Fe-ASP) is an oral iron supplement consisting of a ferroprotein complex where trivalent iron (Fe3+) is bound to casein via N-acetyl-aspartate linkages. Developed by Uni-Pharma SA and marketed under the brand name Omalin, it is indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). The casein-acetyl-aspartate coating protects the iron from the acidic environment of the stomach, preventing the formation of insoluble iron salts and reducing common gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and epigastric pain. The complex remains stable until it reaches the duodenum, where it is enzymatically digested to release bioavailable iron for absorption. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in restoring hemoglobin and ferritin levels in various patient populations, including pregnant women, children, and geriatric patients.
