Iron protein succinylate is an oral iron supplement used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. It consists of ferric (Fe3+) iron bound to a chemically modified (succinylated) casein protein, forming a stable complex that remains insoluble in the acidic environment of the stomach, thereby reducing gastrointestinal irritation. The complex releases ferric ions in the neutral-to-alkaline pH of the duodenum and proximal jejunum, where absorption occurs. After enzymatic digestion, soluble ferric species are released and reduced at the mucosal surface to ferrous (Fe2+) form for transport into enterocytes. This formulation provides gradual and sustained elevation of serum iron levels with improved tolerability compared to traditional ferrous salts, leading to fewer gastrointestinal side effects and shorter treatment duration for anemia[1][3][5][6]. Iron protein succinylate is primarily indicated for treating iron deficiency anemia.
