Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination therapy consists of iron sucrose, a parenteral iron replacement, and epoetin, a recombinant human erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA). Iron sucrose, developed by Vifor Pharma (now CSL Vifor) under the brand name Venofer, provides a source of iron for hemoglobin synthesis. Epoetin acts as an agonist at the erythropoietin receptor, stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of red blood cell precursors in the bone marrow. The co-administration of these agents is a standard clinical approach to managing anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or in preterm infants (anemia of prematurity), where both iron deficiency and insufficient endogenous erythropoietin production may be present.
