Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Iroson-F is an oral combination therapy developed by Obsons Pharmaceuticals, containing iron polymaltose (elemental iron) and folic acid (vitamin B9). It is approved and marketed in Pakistan in both tablet and syrup formulations for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia and latent iron deficiency, particularly during pregnancy, lactation, and periods of rapid growth. Iron polymaltose provides a stable, non-ionic source of iron that is gradually absorbed in the small intestine and delivered to transferrin and ferritin for hemoglobin synthesis, minimizing gastrointestinal side effects compared to traditional ferrous salts. Folic acid is converted by dihydrofolate reductase into active tetrahydrofolate cofactors, which are essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and the prevention of neural tube defects.
