Overview

Iroxanadine is a novel small molecule drug developed by Biorex (Hungary) and also known as BRX-235. It acts as a cardioprotective and vasculoprotective agent, primarily investigated for the treatment of atherosclerosis, vascular diseases, and complications such as ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, restenosis after vascular surgery or angioplasty, diabetic angiopathies, microvascular angina, and diabetic foot. Mechanistically, iroxanadine induces phosphorylation of p38 stress-activated protein kinase (p38 SAPK), which plays an important role in endothelial cell homeostasis. It also enhances the expression of heat shock proteins (notably Hsp70 family members), contributing to cytoprotection against ischemia/reperfusion injury by reducing caspase-dependent apoptosis in endothelial cells. Iroxanadine has shown neuroprotective effects in preclinical models of diabetic peripheral neuropathy without affecting blood glucose levels[1][2][3][4][6].
