Irradiated autologous glioma cells are a personalized cellular immunotherapy used in the treatment of high-grade gliomas, including glioblastoma multiforme and anaplastic astrocytoma. The therapy involves harvesting tumor cells from a patient's own glioma during surgical resection. These cells are then irradiated to render them non-proliferative while preserving their unique profile of tumor-associated antigens. When re-introduced to the patient, typically via intradermal injection, these cells act as a whole-cell vaccine designed to stimulate the patient's immune system to recognize and attack residual or recurrent tumor cells. In clinical practice, these cells are frequently combined with adjuvants or other cell types, such as GM-K562 cells (which secrete GM-CSF) or IL-4-transfected fibroblasts, to boost the recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells and T-lymphocytes.
