Overview

Irradiated haploidentical allogeneic lymphocytes are a type of cellular immunotherapy primarily utilized in the context of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). These are lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, sourced from a haploidentical (partially matched) donor. The lymphocytes undergo irradiation to limit their proliferative capacity, which is crucial for mitigating the risk of severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in the recipient. Despite irradiation, these cells are intended to retain beneficial immunological functions, such as facilitating the engraftment of donor stem cells and mediating an anti-leukemia or anti-tumor effect (graft-versus-leukemia/tumor effect). This therapeutic approach is particularly relevant for patients who lack fully matched donors and is often integrated into conditioning regimens for various hematologic malignancies.
