Overview

The irradiated SB-3123 whole tumor vaccine is an experimental cancer immunotherapy consisting of lethally irradiated SB-3123 murine melanoma cells. Developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this vaccine is designed to expose the host immune system to the full repertoire of tumor-associated antigens and neoantigens present in the SB-3123 cell line. In preclinical studies, vaccination with irradiated SB-3123 has demonstrated the ability to provide long-term protection against live tumor challenge by inducing a robust T-cell-mediated immune response. Research using this vaccine has also explored the mechanisms of tumor escape and immunoediting, identifying how selective pressure from immunotherapy can lead to the emergence of escape variants with unique immunogenic mutations.
