IRX-101 is a novel, non-toxic small molecule ocular antiseptic developed by iRenix Medical for use in ophthalmology. It is designed to prevent infectious endophthalmitis and reduce ocular pain associated with intravitreal injection therapy, which is commonly used for retinal diseases. Unlike the standard antiseptic povidone-iodine (Betadine), which can cause significant corneal toxicity and discomfort, IRX-101 avoids iodine as an active agent and has demonstrated rapid bactericidal activity (near-complete effect within 30 seconds) with minimal ocular toxicity in preclinical studies. It also shows superior efficacy against resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis. The drug is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for indications including prevention of endophthalmitis, reduction of post-intravitreal pain, and treatment of various retinal diseases[1][2][6][7].
