Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Iscador U is a fermented, aqueous extract of European mistletoe (*Viscum album L.*) harvested from elm trees (Ulmus). [3, 5, 8] It is developed and manufactured by Iscador AG and used in anthroposophic medicine as a complementary or integrative treatment for cancer. [1, 3, 16] The product is sold as "Iscador U c. Hg", indicating it is prepared with a homeopathically diluted amount of mercury sulphate. [2, 3] Administered via subcutaneous injection, Iscador U is an approved medicinal product in several European countries, including Germany and Switzerland, for indications such as malignant and benign tumors, precancerous conditions, and prevention of tumor recurrence. [1, 4] The therapeutic action is attributed to its complex mixture of active components, primarily mistletoe lectins and viscotoxins, which are understood to exert immunomodulatory and direct cytotoxic effects, including the induction of apoptosis in cancer cells and stimulation of the patient's immune system. [7, 12, 14]
