Ischemia-tolerant mesenchymal stem cells are a proprietary population of human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells manufactured under hypoxic (low oxygen) conditions to enhance their survival, trophic factor secretion, and functional activity in ischemic tissues. These cells, exemplified by Stemedica’s itMSCs, are expanded in an ischemia-mimicking environment, which upregulates production of pro-angiogenic and chemotactic cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), thereby promoting neovascularization, recruitment of endogenous progenitor cells, and tissue repair in settings like myocardial infarction, stroke, and other ischemic or neurodegenerative conditions.[5] Mechanistically, ischemia-tolerant MSCs exert their effects primarily via paracrine immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and anti-apoptotic support of resident cells rather than direct engraftment, and they are being developed as an allogeneic, off-the-shelf cell therapy for ischemic and inflammatory diseases.[1][3][5]
