Overview

A cell-based therapy involving the transplantation of purified pancreatic islets, containing insulin-producing beta cells, from deceased donor pancreases into patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Developed by the Mayo Clinic, the procedure involves isolating islets at the Mayo Rochester Islet Isolation facility and infusing them into the patient's portal venous system via interventional radiology. The goal is to restore endogenous insulin production and improve glycemic control, particularly in patients with difficult-to-control diabetes or severe hypoglycemia. This biological therapy aims to replace the pancreatic beta cells destroyed by the patient's immune system, thereby providing a functional cure or significant reduction in the need for exogenous insulin.
