Overview

This experimental cell-based therapy, developed at the University of Miami's Diabetes Research Institute, involves the co-transplantation of allogeneic pancreatic islet cells and CD34+ enriched donor bone marrow cells into patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The procedure aims to restore endogenous insulin production while simultaneously inducing donor-specific immune tolerance through the infusion of hematopoietic stem cells from the same donor. By establishing a degree of chimerism, the protocol seeks to prevent the autoimmune and alloimmune destruction of the transplanted islets, potentially allowing for the eventual withdrawal of chronic immunosuppressive medications. The treatment is administered alongside a steroid-free immunosuppressive regimen typically including alemtuzumab (Campath-1H), tacrolimus, sirolimus, daclizumab, and infliximab.
