This drug combination is primarily used in gastric variceal obliteration procedures. It consists of two components: * **iso-amyl-2-cyanoacrylate:** A tissue adhesive that polymerizes upon contact with blood or tissue, causing rapid occlusion of the varix. * **ethiodized oil (also known as Lipiodol or Ethiodol):** A radio-opaque contrast agent and diluent. It is derived from poppyseed oil and iodine, containing 37% iodine. In this combination, it serves as a diluent that does not affect the polymerization of cyanoacrylate, allowing for better control during injection. Its radio-opaque properties provide visualization of the mixture under fluoroscopy. Ethiodized oil is eliminated primarily via urinary excretion as inorganic iodine. The combination carries a risk of pulmonary and cerebral embolism if inadvertently injected intravascularly, which is a significant concern noted in warnings.
