Overview

Isobutyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) and a naturally occurring metabolite with diverse biological roles. It has been identified as a biomarker in various conditions, including elevated levels in the plasma of patients with Medullary Thyroid Cancer and Lung Cancer Brain Metastasis, and in the saliva of individuals with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease. Isobutyric acid plays a role in regulating gelatinase secretion via NF-κB signaling, contributing to periodontal tissue destruction. Furthermore, microbiota-derived isobutyric acid has been shown to suppress NLRP3 inflammasome overactivation, mediating protective effects against colitis. Its levels are also influenced by probiotic interventions, contributing to the alleviation of autistic-like behaviors and the improvement of intestinal barrier function. Additionally, it exhibits antimicrobial properties as a volatile organic compound.
