Overview

Isoeugenol is a naturally occurring phenylpropanoid compound found in the essential oils of various plants such as ylang-ylang. It is an isomer of eugenol and functionally related to guaiacol. Isoeugenol has been widely used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes and other consumer products, but its use has been restricted due to its strong potential as a dermatologic sensitizer and allergen[1][2]. It also plays a role in the mold-inhibiting effect of smoke on meats and cheeses[3]. In medicine, it is approved by the FDA for use within allergenic epicutaneous patch tests to aid in diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in individuals aged six years or older[2]. Isoeugenol acts as an anesthetic agent for fish, though its precise mechanism of action remains undetermined; it may decrease nerve activity at low concentrations[4]. Structurally related compounds include eugenol, safrole, estragole, methyleugenol, and isosafrole[5].
