Overview

Isoleucine is an essential branched-chain aliphatic amino acid required for human health and protein biosynthesis[1][7]. It cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from dietary sources or supplementation[3][7]. Isoleucine plays a critical role in hemoglobin synthesis and regulation of blood sugar and energy levels[1][4]. It also supports muscle growth and repair by participating in muscle protein synthesis as one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), along with leucine and valine[3]. Additionally, it functions as a signaling molecule involved in glucose uptake by muscle cells and metabolic regulation[3][5]. Isoleucine is commonly used as a component of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions to treat or prevent malnutrition or specific metabolic disorders such as maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), phenylketonuria (PKU), liver disease-related amino acid imbalances or muscle wasting conditions[1][5].
