Overview

Leebact is a pharmaceutical-grade branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) preparation consisting of L-isoleucine, L-leucine, and L-valine in a specific ratio (typically 1:2:1.2). Developed and marketed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical in Japan, it is primarily indicated for the improvement of hypoalbuminemia in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis who maintain adequate oral intake. The drug works by stimulating the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway, which is a central regulator of cell growth and protein translation. Beyond its established use in hepatology, Leebact is being investigated for its potential to treat sarcopenia, particularly in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes, by enhancing skeletal muscle mass and physical performance when combined with exercise and other therapies.
