Isomangiferin is a naturally occurring xanthone C-glycoside found in plants such as Mangifera indica (mango) and other species. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as xanthones—polycyclic aromatic compounds containing a xanthene moiety conjugated to a ketone group at carbon 9[5][8][9]. Isomangiferin exhibits several biological activities including antiviral effects (notably against herpes simplex virus type I), antioxidant and radical-scavenging properties[3][4][10]. Mechanistically, it has been shown to inhibit viral replication within cells and functionally inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2), thereby suppressing angiogenesis and tumor growth in preclinical breast cancer models[3][7]. Its anti-cancer activity involves induction of caspase-dependent apoptosis and inhibition of VEGF-induced signaling pathways related to proliferation, migration, invasion, adhesion of cancer cells, and blood vessel formation[7].
