Overview

Isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide) is a small molecule anti-tuberculosis medication being repurposed as an adjuvant therapy to misoprostol for the management of first-trimester missed miscarriage, particularly in women with a history of cesarean deliveries. In this clinical context, isoniazid is administered vaginally to facilitate cervical ripening. The proposed mechanism of action involves the generation of nitric oxide within the cervical tissue, which promotes softening and dilation of the cervix. This effect is intended to enhance the efficacy of misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analogue, in inducing uterine contractions and achieving successful medical termination of pregnancy. This specific research intervention is primarily associated with clinical trials conducted at Aswan University Hospital.
