Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Isopentane (2-methylbutane) is a highly volatile, flammable small molecule alkane with the chemical formula C5H12. It is used primarily as an industrial solvent, propellant, and blowing agent in manufacturing processes. In the medical field, it serves as a component of topical analgesic sprays such as Ralgex Freeze Spray for symptomatic relief of muscular pain and stiffness. Isopentane is also widely used in histology to rapidly freeze tissue samples for cryosectioning when combined with dry ice or liquid nitrogen. Its mechanism of action in medical applications relates to its rapid evaporation and cooling effect on tissues rather than any direct pharmacological target[1][4]. Isopentane has no known specific molecular target or receptor-mediated mechanism.
