Isopentenyltheophylline is a synthetic xanthine derivative and a structural analog of theophylline, modified with an isopentenyl side chain at the 7-position of the purine ring. It is primarily utilized as a bioactive ingredient in topical dermocosmetic formulations for the treatment of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. The compound functions as a non-selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, which increases intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) within the cells of the hair follicle. This elevation in cAMP signaling enhances metabolic activity in the hair bulb, stimulates protein synthesis (including keratin), and is thought to prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle while delaying catagen transition. Additionally, isopentenyltheophylline possesses cytokinin-like activity and acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist, mechanisms that may further support follicular health and microcirculation in the scalp. It is a key component in specialized hair revitalization systems developed by European companies like Labo International and Gerolymatos International.
