Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Isopropyl alcohol + povidone iodine is a topical antiseptic combination used primarily for skin disinfection before surgical procedures or injections. This formulation leverages the rapid antimicrobial action of isopropyl alcohol and the broad-spectrum, persistent activity of povidone-iodine. The combination provides a synergistic effect—acting faster and with a broader spectrum than povidone-iodine alone, while offering more persistent antimicrobial activity than isopropyl alcohol alone. It works by denaturing proteins (isopropyl alcohol) and releasing free iodine to disrupt microbial cell structures (povidone-iodine). This combination reduces bacterial load on the skin to prevent infection at surgical or injection sites[1][3][8].
