Overview

Risankizumab is a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody that selectively inhibits interleukin-23 (IL-23) by binding to its p19 subunit. IL-23 is a pivotal cytokine in the maintenance of Th17 cell-mediated immune responses, which drive the pathogenesis of several chronic inflammatory diseases. By blocking IL-23, risankizumab prevents the activation of the IL-23 receptor and the subsequent release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-17 and IL-22. It is developed by **AbbVie** in collaboration with **Boehringer Ingelheim** and is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. In clinical settings, the drug is typically provided in a kit with **isopropyl alcohol** swabs. Isopropyl alcohol serves as a topical antiseptic used to disinfect the skin at the injection site prior to subcutaneous administration. Its mechanism involves the non-specific denaturation of microbial proteins and dissolution of lipid membranes, thereby reducing the risk of localized infection at the site of delivery.
