Overview

Isopropyl bisphenol is a small molecule positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, currently under clinical development by West China Hospital of Sichuan University for the treatment of focal epilepsy. Chemically a derivative of the anesthetic propofol, isopropyl bisphenol is engineered to provide potent anticonvulsant effects while significantly reducing the sedative and anesthetic properties associated with its parent compound. By enhancing GABAergic inhibitory neurotransmission, it aims to stabilize hyperexcitable neuronal membranes and prevent the spread of seizure activity. The drug is administered via intravenous injection and is being evaluated in Phase Ib trials to assess its safety, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary efficacy in patients with focal epilepsy.
